The birds are singing, the anemones adorn the forest, and the trees begin to bloom. The scent of spring is around us once again and invites us all to move out. Scroll down to get inspiration for the changeable spring weather.

But first. Did you know that more people are happier during spring?

Many people experience an improvement in their mood at springtime, and the desire to be social increases, after a long isolated period at home during wintertime. People yearn to feel the light and the fresh air, and we Danes are especially known for moving outdoors, as soon as the sun shines! The coffee is enjoyed in the garden, on the balcony, a sidewalk cafe, or the playground, we plant new life in the pots as soon as cold nights are gone and we move out the garden furniture or take off to the cottage to get ready for a new season. We are drawn by the light. Spring sets all senses in motion and the sunlight, the fresh air and the blooming nature make us happy. And to that there is a natural explanation.

After a dreary winter, sunlight is the best remedy. It is psychologically stimulating when the sun peeks out and the weather gets warmer, and we associate this time of year with positive experiences, good memories and become "high" by the joy of anticipation.

As we wrote about in this blogpost about sleep last month, using an iPad/phone at bedtime is a bad idea. The light from the screen weakens the body's sleep hormone melatonin and it is difficult to calm down. The hormone tells the body when it's time to sleep, and it happens i.e., by the body detecting that it has become dark. The light from the screen makes you more awake, and the same thing happens when the days are brighter in the spring. Longer bright days simply make us more awake, and we often feel that we are both more efficient, active, and more social through the spring and summer.

Let's talk a little bit more about hormones. Scientists have proven that sunlight exposure increases your body’s release of dopamine and serotonin in the brain causing people to be happier. The hormones give a feeling of well-being - joy, happiness, and excess and it therefore naturally explains why many people are happier in the spring as well as the desire to be more efficient and social in the spring increases.

Make sure to get out into the light and soak up the fresh spring air. Take a deep breath and be present. Activate the senses - listen, smell, see and feel.

Spend the Easter Holidays or the weekend taking your morning or afternoon coffee outside, take your family outdoors for a picnic, go egg hunting in the garden or a surrounding park, head to the beach to feel the wind or spoil yourself with a nap under the duvet on the terrace - feel the fresh air and let the calmness embrace you.

Enjoy <3
